(Reuters) - Apple Inc. <AAPL.O> has designed the Evon and iPads devices that will drop chips provided by Qualcomm <QCOM.O>, according to two people familiar with the issue.
These people said the change would affect the Evon devices that were launched in the fall of 2018, but Apple is still able to change course before then. They refused to be identified because they did not authorize discussion of the matter with the media.
One of the people told Reuters the dispute stemmed from a change in supply arrangements under which Qualcomm stopped providing some software to Apple to test its chips in Evon designs.
The two companies are locked in a multi-national legal dispute about Qualcomm's license terms for Apple.
Qualcomm said it was offering full test chips to Apple for Evon devices. "We are committed to supporting new Apple devices in line with our support for all others in the industry," Qualcomm said in a statement.
The Wall Street Journal reported for the first time that Apple can fall Qualcomm chips Monday.
Analyst Bernstein Stacey Rasgon said Apple's step is not entirely unexpected.
Although Qualcomm has for several years Apple modems - which help Apple phones connect to wireless data networks - Intel introduced <INTC.O> upward half-chip Apple modem to iPhone in recent years, said Rasgon. Intel recently acquired a company that would allow it to replace more Qualcomm chipsets in the iPhone, Rasgon said.
Rasgon said it was premature to say definitively whether Apple plans to fully drop Qualcomm next year because Apple could probably make multiple contingency plans for various resource scenarios.
"Apple is big enough that they want to support multiple paths, they can do it," said Rassgun. "Samsung (electronics company <005930.KS>) also did this, a few years ago, Samsung designed Qualcomm out, but Qualcomm did not even know was close to the time to ship" Samsung phones.
